This example of a mid-Yayoi period shield was excavated from the Kitoragawa historic ruins in the Osaka district, and we now know its shape. This shield was restored by referring to artifacts excavated from the Kitoragawa historical ruins. It was 113 cm long, 19 cm wide at the top, and 34 cm wide at the bottom. Three boards are joined by hemp yarn that passes through some small holes. A comma-shaped piece of copperware is affixed to the central area. A mold for comma-shaped copperware was excavated at the Yoshinogari ruins. It is thought that ancient people believed that the comma shape had great defensive power. It is assumed that comma-shaped copperware was affixed to the shield to defend warriors.
