Nakanomura (Central Village)

The central village is a group of pit dwellings on the western side of the Northern Inner Enclosure. Compared with the Southern Inner Enclosure in the Yoshinogari moat-enclosed settlement, the northern side, with the Northern Burial Mound and the Northern Inner Enclosure, has a strongly sacred character. The village at the center of it is exceptional in showing aspects of daily life. It is assumed that this was the home of the priests who assisted the high priest’s religious rituals in the center of the Northern Inner Enclosure, and who took care of his daily needs. Could this place be the home of people similar to the women who served Queen Himiko, as described in the Gishiwajinden.
